Conditions > Shoulder Pain

Shoulder pain rarely has a single obvious source. It can come from the shoulder joint itself, the rotator cuff, the acromioclavicular joint, or the cervical and upper thoracic spine, which refers pain into the shoulder far more often than most people expect. If you are looking for a shoulder pain chiropractor in North Chesterfield, getting the diagnosis right from the start is what separates care that actually works from care that only offers temporary relief.
When shoulder pain has not responded to treatment aimed solely at the shoulder, the cervical spine is usually the first place I look. Identifying the true source rather than just the most obvious one is the foundation of everything that follows.
The nerves that control sensation and movement in the shoulder and arm exit the cervical spine at the C5, C6, and C7 levels. When those vertebral segments are restricted, irritated, or when the discs between them are under stress, the shoulder is often where the patient feels it. Treating the shoulder alone in these cases gives incomplete results at best, because the source of the problem is upstream.
That said, there are also genuine local shoulder problems: rotator cuff impingement, acromioclavicular joint injury, glenohumeral restriction from a previous injury, and adhesive capsulitis, which is the progressive stiffening sometimes called frozen shoulder. All of these respond well to a combination of targeted extremity adjustments and soft tissue care. The key is figuring out which of these is driving your situation, or whether it's both.
Painful Overhead Reach
Pain or limited range when lifting the arm above shoulder height
Night Pain
Shoulder aching that wakes you or makes certain sleep positions impossible
Weakness
Reduced strength when pushing, pulling, reaching, or lifting
Catching or Clicking
A sensation of something catching inside the shoulder during movement
Stiffness
Limited shoulder rotation, especially reaching across the body or behind the back
Neck-to-Shoulder Pain
Pain that seems to travel from the neck and base of skull into the shoulder and arm
My evaluation distinguishes between local shoulder joint dysfunction and cervically-driven pain by testing both the shoulder's mechanics and the function of the cervical nerve roots. Our INSiGHT thermal and EMG scans often show asymmetric patterns in the upper thoracic and cervical region even before I do the hands-on exam, which helps direct where the treatment focus should go.
For genuine shoulder joint problems, I use extremity adjustments to restore proper mechanics in the glenohumeral, acromioclavicular, and sternoclavicular joints as needed. For the cervical and upper thoracic component, I apply Advanced Biostructural Correction to the restricted segments. Soft tissue work addresses the rotator cuff musculature, the surrounding shoulder girdle, and the upper trapezius and cervical paraspinals that carry so much tension in people who sit at screens all day.
Care is specific and gentle throughout. I explain what I'm doing and why at each step. If I find something that indicates a referral is warranted, such as progressive weakness or signs of serious rotator cuff pathology, I'll tell you directly and help you navigate the right next step.
Most of my shoulder pain patients want to be able to sleep through the night, reach without wincing, and go back to the activities they've been avoiding. Those are achievable goals for the majority of people I see with this problem. The ones who get there fastest are the ones who start care before the shoulder has stiffened significantly and before the nervous system has been adapting to the stress pattern for too long.
